The guest list is where wedding planning stops being about flowers and starts being about family politics. A few ground rules make it much less painful.
Set your total number first, based on budget and venue capacity, not on who you feel obligated to invite. Every other decision flows from that number.
Decide your plus-one policy early and apply it consistently: a common approach is plus-ones for married/engaged/long-term-partnered guests only, not for every single friend's casual date. Whatever you choose, apply the same rule to everyone. Inconsistency is what causes hurt feelings, not the rule itself.
Kids or no kids is a genuinely personal call. There's no universally 'correct' answer. If you go child-free, communicate it clearly and early (on the invite itself, not by word of mouth) so parents can arrange childcare in time.
For 'obligation' invites (parents' friends, distant relatives), a useful trick is a tiered list: your must-haves, then a second tier you invite only if declines from tier one free up space.
Good Wedding's guest list tool lets you track names, RSVP status, and plus-ones in one place as replies come in, no more scattered spreadsheets.
